Our Rock Of Refuge

Worship Devotional from 9/4/22

Psalm 71:1-3:

“Lord, I seek refuge in You; let me never be disgraced. In Your justice, rescue and deliver me; listen closely to me and save me. Be a rock of refuge for me, where I can always go.

Give the command to save me, for You are my rock and fortress.”

A thorough reading through the Psalms reveals some common themes, even shared by psalms that were written in different times and by different people, though we know that all of them were written from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps one of the most prevalent themes throughout the Psalms is the idea that God is our refuge. It is in His presence that we find our true shelter, protection, rest, safety, security, and comfort. When we are under the attack of an enemy, physically or spiritually, we find a true refuge in the Lord. When we are being hammered by the storms and trials of this life, we find shelter under the name of the Most High God. He protects us and defends us against the lies and schemes of the evil one. We come to Him when we are afraid, overwhelmed, anxious, or weary. When we feel like we can’t carry on or like we are about to be crushed by the weight of the world, He is the One we can always run to. He is not far from us, though sometimes it might feel like it. If we would only cry out to Him in faith! He is our God who loves us with a love so great that He even gave His own Son to die for us so that we could be saved and live forever with Him. The Lord our God, the Almighty, the Lord of Hosts, is on our side. He is the One we take refuge in, and He fights for us. May we never run to another in our time of need. Only the Lord is faithful and true forever and always. When we are overwhelmed, we can hide in Him. The shed blood of Jesus Christ has opened the way for us to shelter in the holy presence of the only true and living God. Therefore, when all else fades and collapses, those who dwell in the shelter of the Lord will still be standing on the Rock. He is the only everlasting hope in a world that is broken and fading away.

Psalm 91:1-4:

“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’

He Himself will deliver you from the hunter’s net, from the destructive plague. He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.”

Psalm 32:6-7:

“Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to You at a time that You may be found. When great floodwaters come, they will not reach him. You are my hiding place; You protect me from trouble. You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.”

Psalm 62:5-8:

“Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken.

My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.”

Psalm 90:1-2:

“Lord, You have been our refuge in every generation. Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.”

Psalm 121:

“I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Indeed, the Protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep.

The Lord protects you; the Lord is a shelter right by your side. The sun will not strike you by day or the moon by night.

The Lord will protect you from all harm; He will protect your life. The Lord will protect your coming and going both now and forever.”
