The Greatness Of God

(Greater Still)

Worship Devotional for 10/9/22

Psalm 8:

“Yahweh, our Lord, how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!

You have covered the heavens with Your majesty. Because of Your adversaries, You have established a stronghold from the mouths of children and nursing infants to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I observe Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You set in place, what is man that You remember him, the son of man that You look after him? You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him lord over the works of Your hands; You put everything under his feet: all the sheep and oxen, as well as the animals in the wild, the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea that pass through the currents of the seas.

Yahweh, our Lord, how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!.”

Psalm 145:3-7:

“Yahweh is great and is highly praised; His greatness is unsearchable. One generation will declare Your works to the next and will proclaim Your mighty acts. I will speak of Your splendor and glorious majesty and Your wonderful works. They will proclaim the power of Your awe-inspiring acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They will give a testimony of Your great goodness and will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.”

All of creation testifies constantly to the greatness of God. We cannot comprehend just how great He is, for He is the eternal God, the Creator of the whole universe, the heavens and the earth and everything that is in them. We have spent the millennia pursuing discovery of the things that God made when He created the heavens and the earth by the breath of His mouth — when God spoke and called forth all things into existence — and we have hardly scratched the surface.

Genesis 1:1:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Psalm 33:6-9:

“The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into a heap; He puts the depths into storehouses. Let the whole earth tremble before the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it came into being; He commanded, and it came into existence.”

Romans 11:33-36:

“Oh, the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and untraceable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? Or who has ever first given to Him and has to be repaid? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.”

We are singing to and about the living God, the eternal Creator, the Righteous Judge and sovereign Ruler over all things. He has always existed and always will. He is the One who was, who is, and who is to come. He is the Beginning and the End, and we exist for His glory alone. He is holy and mighty and worthy of all praise and glory and honor forever and ever. We live to exalt Him and to praise His greatness. We spend our whole lives discovering more of how great God is. Through all of our suffering and trials and pain, as well as in all of our joy and delight and pleasure that we experience in this life, whether we have an abundance or suffer need, whether we experience gain or loss, in any and all circumstances the Lord is teaching us how great He is. Everything in our lives and in the whole world and all of creation exists to testify of God’s greatness. We already bear witness by our very existence. Those who do God’s will and reap eternal rewards, pleasing God by their faith and works, honor His name and give praise to Him showing that He is worthy of our full surrender and obedience and trust. He is worthy of all our love. Those who reject and despise Him, who follow after their own sinful desires and refuse to listen to the truth of His word, will still bear witness to His glory, for He will one day judge the living and the dead, and all things that were done in secret will be revealed and brought to light. He will judge the world for its sins and condemn all who refused to believe in His name that they might be saved and renewed in Christ, and God will be glorified in righteousness and perfect justice. May we continue to grow deeper in the revelation of God’s greatness as we sing and praise our great and awesome God who does great and wonderful things. May we surrender fully to the only One who is worthy to be praised, and may the things we say and do in this life bring glory to His name, though we could never fully express how great and how good He is. Hallelujah!

Isaiah 40:28:

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never grows faint or weary; there is no limit to His understanding.”

Psalm 104:1-4:

“My soul, praise Yahweh! Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with majesty and splendor. He wraps Himself in light as if it were a robe, spreading out the sky like a canopy, laying the beams of His palace on the waters above, making the clouds His chariot, walking on the wings of the wind, and making the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants.”

Revelation 4:11:

“Our Lord and God, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because You have created all things, and because of Your will they exist and were created.”
